In an effort to promote energy literacy, the National Energy Foundation develops and delivers energy education programs for K-12 students throughout the US. This year we launched a new energy literacy program, rEV. The program helps students and families learn all about the benefits of electric vehicles and EVs’ impact on society. Also, rEV meets utilities at the intersection of secondary students’ interests and the national acceleration of EV adoption. Of course, you’re curious to know more about rEV, the electrifying education experience. With this in mind, we share below exactly what the program includes, NEF’s role in delivering the program, and the direct benefits to our utility partners.

rEV is a STEM-based multimedia curriculum that maximizes 7th-12th grade students’ ability to act as energy champions, providing them with the necessary knowledge to make the greatest impact. The rEV Interactive Experience, a choose your adventure film exploring EVs’ day-to-day use and features, allows students to envision themselves or their families owning and driving an electric vehicle. Likewise, the rEV Share Form empowers students and their parents to share their voice, knowledge and opinions about EVs. And finally, the rEV challenge motivates students to tell peers about the benefits of EVs.

Program Implementation and Impact

Our program implementation teams provide turnkey programming for the utility sponsor. Implementation services include teacher recruitment, material layout and custom design, content presentation, data collecting and reporting. The program curriculum educates students on electric vehicles as well as electrical generation, local fuel mix and the smart grid. It demonstrates the entire energy story to dispel myths and showcase the variety of resources necessary to power today’s EVs.

NEF knows that the true benefit of energy education programs is the impact on teachers, families and communities.. So we created the rEV Share Form, which provides useful attitude and behavior information. Utilities can use the data delivered to understand the opinions about EVs from household influencers and future drivers. By investing in local school programs, utilities become a valuable and engaged part of the community. Additionally, utilities can demonstrate their commitment to promoting a sustainable future through the unique opportunities offered by electric vehicle education.

Strong student interest matched with goals for EV awareness and adoption created an opportunity for K-12 electric vehicle education. NEF is here to deliver. Thanks to a national STEM education grant from Electrify America, up to 50 percent of the usual program cost will be covered for all program sponsorships in 2021.
