Installing a mailbox or planting a tree seem like innocent summer projects. However, they can have serious consequences if not done safely. August 11th, or 811 Day, serves as a reminder to always call 811 before you dig.

The National Energy Foundation (NEF) is proud to partner with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to promote safe digging practices every day of the year with the annual 811 Video Contest. Students from across the county compete by making a video to educate others about the importance of calling 811.

NEF is excited to announce two grand prize winners for the 2020-2021 school year who stood out against the competition: Saisravya B. from New Mexico and Evette D. from Pennsylvania. NEF awarded laptops to the winning students and gifted their teachers with an $811 classroom grant. The winning videos are featured on NEF’s Energy Safe Kids website

PHMSA’s mission is to protect people and the environment by promoting the safe transportation of energy and other materials that are essential to our daily lives.

Calling 811 before you dig is an easy (and free!) way to keep you and your family safe. You can do your part by calling 811 before you dig, no matter how big or small the project is and reminding your friends and neighbors to do the same! Happy 811 Day!
